I realize now that I was seeing D/s ( dom male/sub female), but with tenderness, romance, and no violence. Coincidentally (or maybe not), I found the Taken In Hand site not long after, and everything came together for me. In that one the Phantom is a nutcase who lives down in the sewers and abducts the heroine. I haven't had the opportunity to see the play or the film but I'd like to see it for myself and decide if it is true. I would agree it's not like that in the old version, from what I have seen of it he's cast as more evil.
