ICU献学50周年記念コンサート「メサイア」には数多くのICU卒業生、教職員、及び在学生、さらに趣旨に賛同する学外の有志の方々の参加を得ることができ、有意義なリハーサルを重ねて参りました。21世紀の最初の年に、母校の献学半世紀を記念し、神の栄光を賛えるこの不朽の名曲の感動をより多くのICU関係者と共有いたしたく、ここにご案内申し上げます。
指揮者にはICU第1期生の長谷川朝雄氏（武蔵野音楽大学講師）を迎え、独唱者にもプロの声楽家として活躍する二人の卒業生（近藤恭子氏と折田真樹氏）の参加を得ることができました。オーケストラ、合唱は共にアマチュアですが、一年間の研鑽を積んだ成果をお聴きいただきたく存じます。
ヘンデルのオラトリオ「メサイア」は、わが国では、クリスマスシーズンに演奏されるのが慣例となっていますが、ご承知の通り、キリストの降誕だけでなく、受難と復活もテーマとしており、もともと受難週に演奏すべく作曲されたといういきさつからも、今回は4月を演奏時期に選びました。他のキリスト教系大学の演奏とはひと味違う、ICUのメサイアをお届けできれば幸いです。
本コンサートの純益はすべてICUの更.なる発展のために、同窓会を通して大学へ献金させていただきます。寄付額1万円をお送りいただいた方には、チケット2枚（全席自由）を郵送させていただきます（当日券もございます）。
ICU50周年記念最大の音楽行事となります「メサイア」公演に、是非ご来聴くださいますよう心よりお待ち申し上げます。
Dear Supporters! ICU Alumni Association Messiah Committee
For the Messiah concert on April 1, 2001, to celebrate ICU's 50th Anniversary, our rehearsals have been successfully conducted with the participation of many ICU graduates, students, faculty members and staff in the chorus and orchestra. Here we would like to announce the details of the concert and to invite you to attend the performance of Messiah. Let us commemorate the milestones of our Alma mater and praise the glory of God together through the great music by Handel in the first year of the new century!
Music director of this performance is Asao Hasegawa (CLA 57), and two of professional solo singers. Kyoko Kondo (CLA 60) and Maki Orita (CLA 81), are also ICU graduates. The orchestra and chorus consist of amateur players and singers graduated from or related to ICU, who will proudly present the result of one whole year's intensive rehearsals.
It has been a custom in Japan to perform Handel's Messiah at the Christmas season. However. Messiah deals with not only the Nativity but also the Passion and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the music was originally intended to be performed during the Passion Week. Thus, we have decided to perform it next April. It would be wonderful if we at ICU could add a new tradition in Japan for this masterpiece.~
All proceeds out of this concert are to be donated for the future projects of ICU through the ICU Alumni Association, and we cordially request you to contribute 10.000 yen to the ICU Alumni Association Messiah Committee for two tickets (no seat reservation), also available at the door.
We sincerely wish you to attend this Messiah concert next April, the greatest musical event to commemorate the ICU's 50th Anniversary.
＜「メサイア」コンサートを祝福して＞ ICU学長 絹川 正吉
「テレプシコーレはリューラを抱き、天を仰いて讃嘆す。」という先哲が残した言葉が、忘れがたく私の脳裏に刻まれています。テレプシコーレはミューズの女神たちの一人で、リューラ（竪琴）を奏でて天を讃美しているのです。音楽とはそもそも神を讃美するために創られたのでしょう。イースターを前に、ICU卒業生を演奏者とする「メサイア」を聴きながら、ICUに連なる私たちが、ご一緒に「天を仰いで讃嘆する」ときを持つことは、まことに至福の限りです。ICUは音楽を専門に学ぶところではありませんが、その卒業生によって、このようなコンサートが可能であることは、ICUリベラル・アーツの実りであり、私たちの誇りです。この度の催しは、ICU同窓会が主催し、ICUが後援しています。同窓会はこのコンサートの収益を、ICU50周年記念事業に寄付されるとのことです。同窓生皆さまのアルマ・マターへの暖かいご支援に、心から感謝を申し上げます。
In congratulation of this Messiah concert Masakichi Kinukawa, President, ICU
"Terpsichore holds the lyre and sings praises of Heaven." This memorable phrase by the Sages is deeply etched in my mind. Terpsichore is one of the Muses, who sings along with her lyre in praise of Heaven. It seems that originally Music was created to praise God, and today is a blissful occasion for us, all related to ICU-- before Easter Sunday we can "sing praises of Heaven" together with the music of Messiah performed by the ICU alumni. ICU is not a music school where performance is taught, but we take pride in the fact that the alumni can accomplish such a concert by themselves. This is a harvest of our liberal-arts education. Today's concert is organized by the ICU Alumni Association with ICU as the supporter, and the Association will generously donate the proceeds to the ICU 50th Anniversary projects. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for your warm support to the Alma mater through this commemorative event.

私たちの母校、国際基督教大学は一昨年創立50周年を迎えました。ICUを設立するという歴史的決定が行われた1949年6月15日を創立記念日としているからです。しかし実際の開学は1953年のことでしたから、50周年を記念する期間はまだ続いていると言えます。これはICUの将来の新たなビジョンを確認する節目であり、同窓会としても母校の発展のために記念募金をはじめ記念事業に参加してきました。それだけでなく、同窓会有志の間で独自の記念事業をしようという動きが起こり、昨年春、グリークラブのOB、OGが中心となって上野の奏楽堂でICU創立50周年記念募金のコンサートが行われました。ICU関係者以外の方々も参加する今回の「メサイア公演」はわれわれの思いをさらに大きく飛躍させるものであります。その数1万5千人は決して大きくはありませんが、同窓生の多様・多彩な生き方、仕事、経験、才能、技能はICUにとってかけがえのない財産であり、大きな誇りです。メサイア公演はそれを如実に示してくれるものと思います。昨年に続き、このような催しを同窓会主催とさせていただけることは大きな喜びです。

International Christian University celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 1999, as June 15, 1949, the date of the important decision to create ICU, commemorates its foundation. Since the actual opening of the university was in 1953, the 50th anniversary celebration is still continuing. This is an important occasion for us to reconfirm the vision the vision for ICU's future, and the ICU Alumni Association has been participating in various programs of celebration, including the 50th anniversary fund-raising campaign. In addition, groups of alumni have taken initiatives to organize events of their own, resulting in the ICU 50th Anniversary Special Charity Concert that took place at the Sogakudo Hall in Ueno in spring, last year. Today's performance of Messiah, with many people outside the ICU community also participating, is an event that will carry the ideas of ICU even loftier. Although the numbers of alumni--15.000 or so -- are by no means large, they constitute a rich reservoir of versatile, colorful lives and professions, experiences, talents and skills. They surely are the most valuable assets for ICU. The Messiah performance will be a vivid example of that. I am greatly delighted that concert is being held as an official event of the Alumni Association.
